Background
About Michaela Lane Spiel
My commitment is, and always has been, to create communities that are equitable, inclusive, supportive, and connected. Data has shown time and time again how strategies that incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion reliably result in significant positive impacts. While much of my background has focused on greater equity in education, what I know to be true is that to have equity in education means there must be equity in healthcare, access to food, urban planning, and other systems that make up our social infrastructure. Taking this systems-thinking, intersectional approach, I meet people where they are, address issues in thoughtful ways, and provide solutions that create a positive ripple into the community and beyond. During my 15+ years working in the Denver Public School system, I developed and delivered programs that radicalized access to higher education, actively addressed the lack of teachers of color, and created pathways for those already working in education to become teachers. The results included a 200+% enrollment increase in teaching programs by student teachers of color, providing funding and resources to 170+ education paraprofessionals to receive teacher training, and development and delivery of DEIB training to 600+ new and veteran teachers. I recently became a Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician at DaVita Kidney Care and have come to appreciate the "patient experience." Providing exceptional care, in addition to equipping individuals with the tools and knowledge necessary for self-care and self-advocacy is critical to navigating our complicated healthcare system. As a Certified Professional Diversity Coach and with duel Master's Degrees in Social, Multicultural, & Bilingual Foundations of Education and International and Intercultural Communication, I believe in the power of intuitive listening so that individuals feel seen and heard and that through intercultural competence and collaboration, solutions come from within communities instead of being placed upon them by an extrinsic force. In this way, communities, individuals, and patients are empowered by empowering themselves.
