Ever walk into a room and not know a single soul? I can remember when I attended my first city agency hosted full day conference as a novice in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. I was nervous, doubting my ability to get the right contacts, and had no idea what I would be walking into. I called the boss before before getting out the car to make sure I had the information I needed for the elevator pitch and get clear on types of services we were selling. Instead of succumbing to internal intimidation, I used a few minutes to gather myself and checked in. After getting the event booklet, I found a breakfast companion and struck up a conversation to break the ice for the day. In that conversation, I was reminded to use a few minutes to learn the floor plan, highlight beneficial panels to sit in on, and what tables to visit. By being adaptable, using interpersonal skills, and being open to learn in the moment I was able to pivot and accomplish goals that were set for the event. This experience taught me the importance of being open to new connections and the power of a friendly introduction. As a professional in the AEC industry, I’m passionate about making connections that are beneficial to all parties involved and creates prospects for business.
