About Michel Kalin

California Licensed Structural and Civil Engineer My background includes a lifelong association with the building industry, starting with working in construction as a part of my family’s redi-mix concrete business and continuing on to obtaining my degree in Architectural Engineering at Cal Poly. This practical experience allows me a unique perspective on the on the reality of the building process in addition to the theory of structural design. I am fortunate to have worked with some of the most creative structural engineers and engineering firms in the country. Starting with Arup after graduation, continuing on with WHL International and then finally with Nabih Youssef Associates where I was Senior Vice President. These previous associations have allowed me to work on a challenging and varied range of projects both domestically and internationally. My work in all of these projects has been intensive requiring coordination with large and diverse project teams, an in depth understanding of building behavior and performance, and most importantly the need to develop reliable and economic structural solutions. All of these experiences are now a part of my own firm, MKSE, where I am able to be directly responsible and focused to project and client needs, yet with a depth of background that allows me to undertake projects of all types and scale. From commercial development to custom residential, historic restorations to research laboratories, performance venues to warehouse storage, for any imaginable building type (and even some unimaginable) I can provide creative, efficient, and appropriate structural solutions.
