About Michelle Breen

As Head of Learning & Engagement at the University of Limerick’s Glucksman Library, I lead a dynamic team dedicated to advancing the university’s teaching and learning mission. I provide strategic direction and operational leadership for a department that delivers innovative, user-centered services and resources to support students, faculty, and researchers across disciplines. A member of the University's Library Management Team, I contribute to the strategic development of library services, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. My work is grounded in a deep commitment to enhancing the academic experience through inclusive engagement, digital innovation, and evidence-based service design. Over the past decade, I have held a range of leadership roles within UL Library, including: Head of Information Services, where I led service transformation initiatives and assessment strategies. Librarian for Administration, managing cross-functional projects and promoting library visibility. Electronic Resources & Web Services Librarian, where I advanced digital access and discovery. Liaison Librarian, supporting the Faculty of Science & Engineering and the College of Education. My early career included both private sector and semi-state experience, working within the R&D division of Analog Devices Inc, and providing first line academic support to researchers at the Linguistics Institute of Ireland. The time I spent as a student at DELL Ireland adds to my broad foundation in both corporate and academic environments. I am an active contributor to my profession through conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and professional service. I currently serve on the Council of the Library Association of Ireland (LAI), contributing to its Centenary Planning Group 2028, the CPD Committee, the Western Regional Section and am chair of the LAI's Labour Market Taskforce. I gained substantial governance and regulatory experience having served 2 terms on the University of Limerick's Governing Authority, representing PMSS colleagues from 2015 to 2022.
