Background
About Michelle Galvis
When I was in High School I wanted to work for Coca-Cola really desperately. I admired that company like no other and I was planning to go to college for business and one day get myself in that company. It turns out, all I do is drink Coca-Cola these days (not often, I prefer water). However, as years went by, my aspirations and interest shifted. As I matured, I started to find joy in helping others. At Alaska Airlines, I had an Asian man and his family come to the counter to check in for their flight. They spoke no English and I didn’t know their language. I do not know how we did it, but after using made up sign language and bowing to each other, I realized they were at the wrong Airline. Therefore, I walked them around the corner and when we got to the correct airline, I made them understand that where we were standing, it was the airline for their booked flight but it was closed and they had to wait. The man was telling me with hand gestures to please check him in. I explained to him that I worked for another company and I couldn't do that. I kept saying to him that I was really sorry. We kept bowing and smiling to each other. The only English words that came out of their mouths were “thank you, you nice”. That, melt my heart. And that is why I like to help people. The most rewarding job I had has been at Amazon Logistics. When I became a Learning Coordinator it was like becoming the warehouse big mama. Many of the associates were just a few years younger than me, so I felt very motherly. I loved it, many of them used to come to look for me for advice because they wanted to get promoted and did not know how, and I was more than happy to help them. Others needed help on how to navigate resources. There was an older man whose name I do not remember who needed help to purchase safety boots given by amazon and did not know how to navigate Zappos, I had, I really had to help him. I currently work part-time as an interpreter. I meet with Spanish speaking patients. I help them fill out medical forms and I accompany them inside the exam room to translate for them. It's rewarding, especially when the patients are older and they thank me not only for my service but they tell me that I was kind and mindful of their needs. Now thinking retrospectively about the various jobs I had and experiences I had encountered; I truly believe the key to my most successful positions is not only my genuine desire to help others, but my enthusiasm to make situations better, and my smile. Definitely everything can change with a smile. Now, I wonder If Coca-Cola is hiring.
