About Michelle Mitchell

I have 30+ years experience working with the Deaf in various countries. My advocacy work with persons who have various abilities at grassroots level started in Cape Town, South Africa and has extended to other African countries and Ireland. Furthermore, I have presented papers at Kyambogo University, Uganda and Pretoria University, South Africa on early intervention for the Deaf in education to provide a level playing field. As an avid supporter of the European Anti Poverty Network in Ireland, I have written several documents raising the issue of 'disability and poverty' going hand in hand. I hope to present a paper in the future for the EU on this vital issue. I am also currently involved in the promotion of Irish Sign Language as a recognised language in Ireland to prepare for the ISL Bill which is being worked on at present by the Deaf community and advocates in order to create the best and most comprehensive Bill that will provide the Deaf with the necessary supports for education, employment, training, early intervention to name a few.
