Background
About Michelle Suderman
Students are entering post-secondary education from more diverse sectors than ever, and their success or failure impacts our classrooms, campuses and institutional outcomes. My passion is to lead and engage in diverse teams so that students thrive and institutional strategic goals are achieved. A former Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) with a doctorate in international student services, I am a national leader in immigration advocacy and international student support with demonstrated impact on student learning and retention. I love engaging with high-impact teams to deliver award-winning programs for and with students. Together we initiate and deliver inter-institutional and cross-campus projects that improve students’ lives. I’ve been fortunate to improve campus services and processes repeatedly for better student experiences. I have a track record of creating and sustaining far-reaching partnerships to support institutional priorities. Select accomplishments include- Received Canadian Bureau for International Education Chair’s Award for Meritorious Service; designed strategies and led inter-institutional advocacy, ensuring agenda was heard and incorporated into federal legislation and policies in order to increase yield, employability, and retention of international students- Increased social integration of international students and global citizenship outcomes for all students by creating and expanding Simon K.Y. Lee Global Lounge, hosting 13K attendees at 500+ events annually, offering $35K Global Fund mini-grant program- Leveraged strong relationships across campus to grow intensive academic orientation for new international undergraduate students in partnership with 55 Faculty Fellows from 7 faculties; tied to increased GPA and retention to 2nd-year. Key areas in which I and my teams add value include- Academic and Career Advising - Educational Design and Workshop Facilitation - Program Administration - Intercultural Communication - International Student Services - Qualitative Research and Impact Assessment - Supervisory Leadership - Student Affairs - Event Management - Public Speaking - Immigration
