Background
About Micky Renders
Micky Renders is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Environmental Studies, Queen’s University, and a member of Canada’s Waste Flow, an interdisciplinary research team connecting people interested in the topic of waste. Her research aims to animate the issue of waste(s) broadly defined, in collaboration with Inuit artists in Pangnirtung, Nunavut. Her project seeks to use a decolonial framework that serves as an urgent call to action on Arctic waste(s), for which she was awarded the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Doctoral Scholarship, Queen’s University Project and Portfolio PhD Award, and the Northern Scientific Training Award. Micky Renders has been an artist/educator/activist for over twenty years in Peterborough Ontario. Her community-based art practice promotes social justice and inclusion. Micky has earned the Prime Minister of Canada's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2018 -one of the most prestigious awards nationally. She earned the inaugural Drawing the Line Award (2018) for her activism around preventing violence against women and specifically for the I Witness Project - challenging the deniability of rape culture. In 2011 Micky received the YMCA Peace Medal and a Civic award for Cultural Betterment. She taught visual art in a public high school and was nominated for the Ontario Art Education Association Secondary Art Educator of the Year Award in 2012. OUTSIDERS2012 (with Kim Renders) was one of the most popular open call events selected for Nuit Blanche in Toronto 2012. It was featured on the cover of NOW Magazine. Micky's artwork has been the subject of solo exhibitions at ARTSPACE artist-run centre in Peterborough, and the Art Gallery of Peterborough in 2011. Her work is included in private and public collections throughout Ontario. Finding Joy, an installation of 26 paintings, has been purchased for the permanent collection at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Micky is a co-founder and former board member of the SPARK Photo Festival. She has also curated group shows called Still ReFrame from for ReFrame International Film Festival and Lovers in a Dangerous Time for AIDS2006 International Conference in Toronto.
