About Miguel Bernal
Since November 2022 I am the Executive Secretary of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of FAO. I am responsible for implementing policies as agreed by GFCM Countries to ensure the sustainability of fisheries and the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Previously, I have led the technical work of the GFCM Secretariat on fisheries-related issues, promoting the modernization of our work in support of decision-making, including through the publication of the biennial FAO-GFCM report on the State of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries. Before working for GFCM, I have also worked in several top-level universities and fisheries research institutes across the world, contributing to the assessment and management of key fisheries in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean and publishing numerous scientific contributions in the fields of fisheries, ecosystem modeling, and climate change.
