Our leaders tend to be either: who organise and motivate like pros, but feel left behind overseeing complex processes or making technical decisions: who know the subject matter inside out — but were never taught core leadership skills like organising and motivating. When I started as a leader, I had engineering skills, natural planning skills and … not much else. Over 30 years, I used research, with trial and error, to grow into a sought-after leader with divisional and executive level experience. Under my watch, subject-matter experts become leadership experts. And, non-expert leaders learn to understand the intricacies of working in technical areas: I’ve led industry giants and recent graduates. I’ve been a leader on the ground and in the boardroom.
