About Mike Cougevan

Joined Martindale Consultants in 1994 after a 13-year career at ConocoPhillips. Mike is Martindale's Vice President responsible for the firm's JV expenditure audits, provides senior leadership, expertly manages clients’ joint venture audit and other projects, and shares his extensive industry experience and knowledge to train Martindale employees. Mike also regularly provides expert witness and arbitration and litigation support and has been accepted and designated as an expert in numerous State courts and in Federal court.Mike has conducted, led, or managed more than 500 audits over 28 years. consults with operators and non-operators as to proper accounting for costs, and routinely assists with JOA/Accounting Procedure negotiations to help ensure agreements provide what the parties intend. Lead or member of teams which drafted approximately 17 COPAS publications, including the 2005 Accounting Procedure. Mike has been an active member of COPAS since 1987 and has served as Emerging Issues Chair, Audit Committee Chair, Research and Advisory Committee Chair, Vehicle Rates Subcommittee Chair, and served on the COPAS Board of Directors for six years; President in 2012. Mike received the COPAS Eagle Award (2004) and was inducted into the COPAS Ring of Honor in October 2022.Mike is a regular speaker at numerous industry events, conferences, seminars, and COPAS society meetings, technical sessions, and education days.Mike is considered a prominent authority on Gulf of Mexico accounting issues and has performed international reviews in Australia, Barbados, Brazil, and Guyana.At ConocoPhillips, Mike's positions included financial analysis, joint interest accounting, internal reviews, managing non-operated properties, negotiation of agreements, and settlements of joint interest and revenue audits and disputes.M.Cougevan@marticons.commarticons.com
