I feel fortunate to be working in this field and I have the education and licensure that allows me to do that. But it is my own lived experience that is probably my best asset as a counselor. I spent most of a decade on and off the streets of Phoenix, visiting every possible institution. I was self-medicating depression the only way I knew how. I understand what it is like to be a client—a client that was deemed hopeless by many. It is at that point of hopelessness where we can start over, begin again and find fulfilling lives. I believe in the therapeutic approaches I use with my clients, because they have worked for me. I’m excited to be working in this field and believe change is always possible.
