Throughout my change management career, I have thrived on the challenge of tackling problems in large organizations. Exposure to large-scale challenges, however, led me to a simple conclusion. Implementing and sustaining impeccable quality and customer satisfaction happen far more often in a smaller business. I’ve become a big advocate of businesses that live by the adage, “As much as is needed… As little as possible!” My first tiny business is my role as a “freelance change management consultant.” Decades of change management experience allow me to help organizations cut through the foggy landscape of change related tools methods and efforts. Lisa and I picked up our first tiny business together in 2012. Instead of leaving our retirement funds at the fate of the stock market, we invested in a half-complete little mobile home park named Twin Rivers in Kingsland, TX. We spent 5 years finishing the park and making it a well-respected affordable housing community. During that time, we saved a lot of money and time living in a tiny space. An RV in Austin’s iconic Pecan Grove RV Park in the very slot once occupied by actor Matthew Mcconaughey. In Kingsland, we came across an 11-acre property with a tiny lake surrounded by granite outcroppings. We hand-cleared the land and brought in three “Park Model RV” tiny homes. We set up one tiny home as our residence and the other two as a retreat for guests and vacationers. Another tiny business! Living in a Platinum Cottage tiny home and experiencing the quality and craftsmanship inspired us to become a Platinum dealer. Tiny business number four!
