Background
About Mike Marriott
I am a principal lecturer and a member of NTU Psychology in the School of Social Sciences. As a registered clinical psychologist, an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, I bring both academic and practical expertise to my role. Since September 2024, I have served as the co-chair for the national Group of Trainers in Clinical Associates (in Applied) Psychology, GTiCA(A)P. My work focuses on learning and teaching in mental health and clinical psychology practice, as well as undergraduate psychology teaching and tutorials. I also supervise research projects at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels, supporting DPsych and PhD candidates. As part of NTU Psychology's management team, I lead initiatives to enhance workplace culture within the department. For example, I played a key role in achieving the department’s Athena Swan Silver accreditation in July 2024. Beyond teaching, I am a scholar of psychological practice and have contributed to various workforce development initiatives both regionally and nationally. I also maintain an active interest in fostering external collaborations for NTU, particularly within healthcare settings. Career Overview I have been in academia since 2015, when I joined NTU as a senior lecturer. During this time, I developed and led the MSc Psychology in Clinical Practice, which enabled psychology graduates to engage in successful collaborations with local healthcare providers. This program laid the groundwork for delivering the MSc Clinical Associate in Psychology Apprenticeship. I have supervised a range of PhD and DPsych projects focusing on mental health and psychological practice and have been a project member on research funded by Innovate UK and the Bial Foundation. In 2021, I became a principal lecturer, taking on additional management responsibilities for the department, including serving as course director for the first cohort of the MSc Clinical Associate in Psychology Apprenticeship. I have also served as an external examiner and consultant for numerous universities in England. My career in NHS mental health services began in 2002. After qualifying as a clinical psychologist in 2007, I worked in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) until 2023. My most recent role involved specializing in working with young people with severe eating difficulties as part of a newly created team. In this role, I took a co-leadership position, helping to develop the team's processes and successfully bidding for ongoing funding.
