Background
About Mike McDermott
Modelling & Simulation (M&S) specialist focused on developing sophisticated mathematical models and numerically robust computational tools, to aid in modern-day industrial energy challenges. In my current role as lead PDRA, I develop multi-scale simulation tools to predict the thermal-hydraulic behavior of nuclear fusion reactor components, emphasising transient response analysis with a robust object-oriented system code. I obtained a First-Class Honours MPhys in Theoretical Physics from the University of Leeds, with a great interest in applied mathematics and fluid dynamics. My PhD followed, involving creating robust turbulent viscoelastic models for drag-reducing polymer flows, and building novel computational codes (OpenFOAM). The PhD led to 3 lead-author publications in high-impact journals. During my 2nd year, I initiated and organised an international collaboration with the University of Porto, the leading experts in the specified field. I worked for 3 months in Porto with professors to build sophisticated models suitable for industrial flows that can be integrated into OpenFOAM. My projects have extended to industrial CFD consultancy (Research Officer) with Procter & Gamble on the design and through-put optimisation in spray drying, where I regularly communicated and presented complex scientific data for business requirements. I joined the Nuclear Engineering community as an RA developing a novel OpenFOAM coding package to predict heat exchanger thermal hydraulics. I have been president, treasurer, and club captain for a University sports team. In my time we achieved the most improved club of the year award for vastly boosting membership and for various charity work; won the prestigious sports team of the year award for team national title records; along with individual accolades such as sportsperson of the year nominations, representing England students, and obtaining Gryphon Award for sporting excellence. Other positions of responsibility I have held include sub-warden in student halls; student ambassador for the School of Physics and Astronomy; demonstrating and teaching on multiple undergraduate modules; summer research projects within the School of Chemical Engineering. My main assets are the enthusiasm, proactiveness, perseverance and work ethic I apply and maintain in a team setting - demonstrating strong leadership qualities, astute interpersonal communication skills, and good project and time management. I have completed a 100km London to Brighton challenge and 72 hole golf challenge for suicide prevention and men's mental health.
