Background
About Mike Miles
I am a broadcast journalist whose rich experience spans more than 40 years, thanks to ambition, talent, a willingness to learn, and an eagerness to take on new challenges. In that time, I've gone from putting words on the screen, to writing them for others, and eventually, speaking them myself on national radio. Since October 2023, I've been an editor/presenter on The World This Hour, an hourly newscast on CBC Radio. Usually overnights on Thursday/Friday/Saturday, but sometimes I'll host afternoons/early evenings (Eastern time). When I'm not on-air, I'll be producing news stories for The World This Hour, World Report, or Your World Tonight. My previous experience at CBC News includes writing for The National and CBC News Network, and producing stories for The World at Six/Your World Tonight. I came to CBC News after a two-year return to CTV News, where I wrote for CTV News Channel, produced the affiliate feed, and occasionally produced promos for CTV National News. This followed 15 years at CHCH-TV in Hamilton, Ontario, where I advanced from Overnight Assignment Editor, helping launch Morning Live, to producer of flagship newscast CHCH News at Six. I produced CHCH News at Noon, and News at 11, and content for the station's website. Between 1997 and 2001 I was at CTV National News, where I was one of the original writers at what was then CTV News1, now CTV News Channel. I was also a back-up line-up editor. My broadcast experience started in 1985, when I was lucky enough to begin 12 years at Citytv. It was my first TV school. I went from being a graphics operator, adding skills like production assistant, floor director, and weather graphics operator. Along the way I picked up some writing and producing skills. Prior to this, I'd worked in what was then called 'industrial television'- that is, TV used internally by business. Three years at a company that sold video equipment, and before that - right out of high school - I worked with my father at with a production company that made training tapes. It's been quite a journey! Of course, I had lots of help and guidance along the way from mentors and colleagues. I've become better because of them, and hope I've lived up to expectations.
