About Mike Okane

As a student at the UofS I was very fortunate to be learn about the power of human connection through trust and collaboration; I owe much of these experiences to Dr. Lee Barbour. At the same time, I was learning more about the incredible giving my parents had done over their lifetime.These experiences strongly influence my passion for collaborating with people within the mining industry; specifically around integrating mine planning and mine closure, while also giving back where I can to communities and people in need. I was very humbled in 2014 to receive the University of Saskatchewan Alumni Achievement Award for “Global Development of his Business and Corporation, and Philanthropy”.I continue to work with Okane because I remain passionate about being a part of achieving social and environmental outcomes in the mining industry I can be proud of. My vision is to help create a better tomorrow for the mining industry, surrounding communities, indigenous peoples, and First Nations. This vision contributes to the work I do with Okane and as a Board Member with the Landform Design Institute; namely, to always begin, and function throughout, with the end in mind.I am committed to being curious. to learn and grow from every experience as a person and a professional. I love the creative aspect of my work, where I can offer my technical expertise and knowledge on risk management to encourage collaboration when evaluating and optimizing a mine site's “best” next land use, so that we are all aligned on acceptable level of residual risk, and we can all understand what is required to maximize incremental net present value while achieving progressive ESG outcomes.
