About Mike Otieno

Mike Otieno is a Chartered Engineer (UK) and Senior Lecturer in Reinforced Concrete Structures in the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire, UK. I received my PhD and MSc (Eng) degrees from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a First Class Honours BSc (Civil Eng.) degree from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. I also hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (in Higher Education, with Distinction) from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, mentorship and research, I have worked previously as Head of School and Associate Professor, and held various senior administrative roles in the higher education sector. I also have extensive experience in curriculum development and renewal, quality assurance and programme accreditation. In fulfilling my current role in the higher education sector, I am passionate about education and research that is impactful especially for the next generation. I also take keen interest in mentorship of learners and emerging researchers and leaders especially on the African continent. While my teaching covers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in construction materials, including strength/mechanics of materials, I also focus on creating and advancing learning opportunities especially for the less privileged and previously disadvantaged learners in the society. My interests are in the fields of concrete technology, and Education & Research for Impact.
