About Mike Young

I have held a variety of research and conservation-related positions. My PhD investigated the behaviour, ecology and genetics of freshwater fishes in the Pilbara and Kimberley regions of Western Australia, and I was heavily involved with secondary and tertiary zoology teaching programmes. Subsequently I spent time coordinating the Western Australian component of a national review of threatened species recovery plans, for the Commonwealth government. This role gave me an understanding of (and appreciation for) biodiversity management in Western Australia. Since early in my career, I have accumulated experience in conducting fauna surveys on mine sites in the Pilbara region and other parts of Western Australia. Due to the emphasis on field work in my career and a personal drive to explore Australia’s wilderness areas, I have extensive knowledge of remote area operations and enjoy working in the arid zone. These interests led to zoological and ecological roles in the environmental consulting industry, and subsequently to my current work for the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.
