Experienced parasitologist (inter alia), including malariologist, who for example coined the term "hypnozoite", which is used for the dormant liver stage of Plasmodium. RECENT AWARDS (past 2 years): September 2023: Elsdon-Dew Medal of the Parasitological Society of Southern Africa (their highest honour). February 2024: Award from Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand,"for dedication and achievement in research for the 2023 academic year". April 2024: Wits Research Institute for Malaria (WRIM) Lifetime Achievement Award. July 2025: Lifetime Achievement Award received from the South African Medical Research Council. Long-standing member of various professional bodies, including the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (Life Fellow and ex-Local Secretary); American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (Life Member); British Society for Parasitology; and Australian Society for Parasitology (Life Member).
