About Mirjam Hirt

As an Atmospheric scientist, I am working in the field of numerical weather prediction to build better, numerical models for predicting our weather. My current focus lies on the prediction of thunderstorms and the predictability of weather at different scales, i.e. how far in advance can we reasonably predict different weather phenomena. For my research, I use many different tools, including mathematical methods to understand underlying physics, numerical models for simulations and machine learning methods such as causal graphs to analyse the big data that the numerical models produce. I studied Meteorology at the Freie Universität Berlin and have worked as PhD student and PostDoc at the LMU Munich since then. I spent a couple of months at the Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, at the University Center of Svalbard, and at the Munich Re in Munich. I am curious about understanding the world we live in and how we can get that understanding from all the data and observations we have. As a data scientist, I hope that our current machine learning methods will better enable causal understanding in the future. Furthermore, I wish to contribute to a more sustainable society that treats every human with respect and values our planet.
