About Mirko Pasquini

WHO AM I? I am a researcher in the field of Control Engineering, specialized in Model-Based Design of Experiments (MBDOE), Mathematical Optimization and Nonlinear Systems Analysis. I am a curious, thorough, reflective, purpose-driven and open-minded person, with a creative and ethical-aware problem solving approach. MY RESEARCH JOURNEY I have been a postdoc at KTH in Stockholm, where I have been part of a collaboration between the Division of Decision and Control Systems (DCS) and the Competence Center for Advanced Bioproduction by Continuous Processing (AdBIOPRO). Here I designed and simulated model-based approaches in bioprocessing to optimize the production of pharmaceuticals through feed media optimization. Before then, I got my PhD in Control Engineering at Imperial College of London where I worked on designing Lyapunov functions to study the stability properties of Genetic Regulatory Networks, a representation of how genes in a cell interact with each other. Through my years of research I have developed a passion and a strong competence in Applied Mathematics, I learned how to successfully manage my research projects, work proficiently in heterogeneous teams and communicate effectively my results to audiences with different backgrounds and levels of expertise. ‍ WHAT DRIVES ME I am able to work at my best when I can see the bigger picture, when my effort is driven by a strong purpose and a clear end goal. I find immense energy in purposeful teamwork, where I can contribute to the flow of ideas, and where efforts align toward a shared goal. I have always found fascinating how the beauty of Mathematics and its tools can meet other fields in the most elegant ways, to address meaningful technical challenges and tangibly improve people’s lives. My mission aligns with this as I believe that researchers and engineers have a moral duty to try to give a positive contribution to the solution of pressing societal problems, for the benefit of humanity. I have always loved to put together small and simple blocks together, to create something complex, meaningful and beautiful.
