Background
About Mitch Harvey
As an Electronics Technician Supervisor for a university-led transportation research company, I manage an advanced electronics laboratory specializing in the design, assembly, testing, and deployment of custom-built electronic systems for transportation studies. My team focuses primarily on highway vehicles, including commercial heavy vehicles, pedestrian safety systems, and consumer automotive research. With a strong foundation in hardware and software integration, I oversee the development of custom data acquisition systems, camera hubs, CAN interfaces, and VCB controllers. Our work combines in-house designed electronics with off-the-shelf components like USB cameras, automotive radars, and LiDARs to create innovative research solutions. We run our systems on a custom-built Linux Ubuntu OS and have also developed a ROS-based platform for automotive automation studies. Beyond hardware, I design and implement software solutions using C++, Python, and VBA to optimize team workflows, automate processes, and streamline firmware flashing for multiple manufacturers. I also track and manage equipment lifecycles through an Excel-integrated barcode system, which supports logistics, installation, and maintenance efforts. My role extends into field operations, where my team balances laboratory preparation, installation, and testing. We deploy our systems across the U.S and the world. Our installations range from rapid 1-4 hour setups for Raspberry Pi-based systems to multi-day semi-truck installations. To enhance quality control, we have established a five-stage workflow covering assembly, packing, testing, QA, and deployment. I also support troubleshooting and maintenance through an integrated ticketing system, ensuring real-time issue resolution and data collection for long-term improvements. I am always looking for ways to improve efficiency, standardize troubleshooting, and enhance field communications. If you're interested in collaborating on automotive research, electronics development, or workflow automation, feel free to connect!
