Background
About Mitchell Barnes
As an environmental professional, I am passionate about our journey to a greener future. I have recently completed the Master's of Science in Environmental Practice program at Royal Roads University and have been awarded my MSc. I have a broad spectrum of skills ranging from environmental site assessments, regulatory compliance, environmental health and safety, and environmental management practices. I have gained knowledge regarding the Alberta OHS Act and regulations with EHS Partnerships. In my most recent role with EHS Partnerships, I contributed to the firm's success by completing many important projects and producing professional deliverables for clients. These projects include ensuring provincial regulatory compliance by contractors, conducting on-site field environmental and occupational health assessments, sampling, laboratory analysis, and reporting. These projects ensured that hazardous waste projects in the province were being completed within Alberta OHS guidelines. With my experience from EHS Partnerships, working at residential, business, and industrial levels has provided me with the skill to effectively identify and eliminate hazards to ensure the safety of myself and others. In addition to my occupational health and safety experience, I have built upon my existing knowledge and skills regarding environmental management in my master's program. In Royal Roads University's Environmental Practice program, I have completed many valuable projects. My final research paper investigated the impacts of pipeline construction on equivalent land capability in Alberta and how to minimize these impacts. Additionally, I prepared a proposal for a bank and environmental panel in which I presented the benefits of predicting a horticulture zone shift caused by climate change to introduce new plant species for economic gain and ecosystem health. Specifically, I proposed a business model for a fig tree farm in lower mainland British Columbia. This project provided me with the opportunity to use my knowledge of national plant hardiness zones and climate change to introduce a suitable and sustainable business model. Another project that I had completed was the implementation of an environmental policy and policy tools for a flood-prone southern Alberta town with water quality issues. This project allowed me to think critically and to gain the skills to use policy as an environmental management tool.
