About Mitchell Gass

Specialties: User research, participatory design, UX prototyping, and usability testing for software, websites, web applications, mobile applications and devices, and consumer products. Consultation on the design of usability labs and on video equipment and techniques for user research. Before founding uLab, I was a Director of User Research at the e-business consulting firm Scient. My more than 30 years of experience in high-technology firms include 11 years at Apple Computer and projects in their Advanced Technology Group, founding the Lucent InterNetworking Systems Usability Center, and writing the first human interface specification for the Amiga personal computer. I’ve been a pioneer in remote research, starting in with my first experiments with remote usability testing at Scient. I've conducted usability tests and other user research and design activities for wide range of organizations, from Fortune 500 firms to fast-growing startups. These include Adobe, Charles Schwab, Dropbox, Dun & Bradstreet, Flipboard, Kodak, LexisNexis, Punchcut, Sony, Stanford University, Symantec, The Walt Disney Company, Wells Fargo, and Xerox. My projects have included websites, web apps, mobile apps and devices, online services, enterprise and consumer software, software and web development tools, social networks, consumer electronics, health management tools, and technology for automobiles. I'm a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and its Special Interest Group for Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI). I've served on the conference committee for ACM SIGCHI's international CHI conference, where I was Co-Chair for the Interactivity venue, and as Chair of BayCHI, the world's largest and most active local chapter of ACM SIGCHI, which serves Silicon Valley and the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
