I've been fortunate to have a job where I was encouraged to continue to gain new skills. At vintage we have "10% time", where Friday afternoons we get to work on whatever we want, as long as it's business related. During my 10% time I would consult with our product team, and we found safe ways add new cutting edge features. I added a system to detect duplicate sale pictures (before the system customer support would have people manually scan for pictures they had seen before). I also added web-socket support with azure signalR service, so that our users could receive instant updates. I also used this extra time to explore cleaner ways of writing our code. I researched best practices on pluralsight, and found Vladimir Khorikov's course on functional programming. After seeing all the great benefits of a functional style of programming in c#, I presented the idea to the rest of the team. Following our discussion, I re-wrote our new microservices in more of a functional style.
