Background
About Mohammed Elasrag
Lecturer in Medical Genomics & Bioinformatics | Programme Director – MSc & MRes in Bioinformatics and Genomic Medicine | Researcher in Genomics, NGS & AI-driven Bioinformatics I’m a Lecturer at Aston Medical School and Programme Director for two exciting postgraduate degrees in Bioinformatics and Genomic Medicine (MSc & MRes). With over 15 years of academic and research experience, my work bridges computational biology, genomics, and precision medicine. My background includes a PhD from the University of Leeds, where I identified novel genes responsible for inherited retinal diseases using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), resulting in 10+ peer-reviewed publications and an Academic Excellence Award. I’ve since led bioinformatics projects at St. James’s University Hospital, the University of Manchester, and the University of Birmingham, establishing a Bioinformatics Support Unit and driving research across cancer genomics, psychiatric genetics, and multi-omics data integration. My expertise spans: • Genomic technologies (NGS, single-cell, nanopore, GRO-seq, Hi-C/4C, RNA-seq) • Bioinformatics and AI/machine learning applications in healthcare • Multi-omics integration and translational research • Academic leadership and programme development I’m passionate about education and have taught genomics and bioinformatics across multiple UK institutions, mentoring students at undergraduate, MSc, and PhD levels. Let’s connect if you’re interested in collaborative research, postgraduate opportunities, or advancing innovation at the intersection of medicine and data science.
