Background
About Mohammed Rashid
I am an Assistant Professor of Critical Cultural Communication and Media Criticism at the University of Southern Mississippi. Previously, I worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Center on Digital Culture and Society, in the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. I completed my Ph.D. in August 2023 from the Bass School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology at the University of Texas at Dallas. I am a media and communication researcher, and my work is situated at the intersections of South Asian networked communication, global media cultures, and affective public formation. I am interested in the possibilities and affordances of new media communication technologies for imagining a just, equitable, and queer South Asia. I am writing a book that examines Bangladeshi digital media, including blogging networks, social media, online discussion forums, and archival websites, as crucial spaces where Bengali sexualities—both as identities and practices—are regulated and negotiated between dominant publics and subaltern counter-publics and where non-normative sexualities can be reclaimed and legitimized through online resistance and virtual world-making. I am also collaborating with the Fashioning Circuits Research Collective (http://fashioningcircuits.com/) at San Jose State University, where I have been working as the Humanities Team Lead for the Migrant Steps Project, along with working on multiple other creative and critical-making projects. I also have 10 years of experience in undergraduate and graduate-level teaching and five years of experience as a language and communications trainer. I am trained in multiple research methods in the humanities traditions, including discourse analysis, textual analysis, and close reading, along with practices in ethnography and qualitative social science that include site visits, participant observation, user experience research, interviews, focus groups, and autoethnography. I have presented my research at national and international conferences such as the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE), Western States Communication Association (WSCA), Queer Asia Roundtable, and the Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory (HASTAC).
