Background

About Monique Reid

Graduating with a PhD (Economics) in 2012, I began my career as a monetary economist with a strong interest in institutions, policy and public behaviour. Living and working in an emerging market economy with some sophisticated institutions and well-developed financial markets, but also extreme levels of inequality, has inspired me to pursue an innovative approach to furthering my understanding of behaviour and recommendations for policy. Working in a respected, research-intensive South African university has allowed me to develop this interest in a range of ways. I have lectured graduate level macroeconomics and monetary economics for 14 years, led and collaborated on over 15 published research papers, and participated in policy relevant research conferences, workshops and fellowships. I have also had some opportunity to interact with institutions outside of academia (the South African Reserve Bank and the Bureau of Economics Research, South Africa). I have also become increasingly interested in working on inter-disciplinary teams, an interest that was further encouraged by the time I spent as a Guest Professor at the Technical Univeristy Darmstadt. I have successfully published research papers with both social scientists and a data scientist and have enjoyed both. I am part of a project team which aims to use large corpus textual data and modern data science techniques to create an infrastructure index for South Africa, where I have been collaborating with a microeconomist and a civil engineer. Recently, I joined the Research Unit of the South African Reserve Bank. My academic research has always had a policy focus, so I am looking forward to enriching my understanding of policy from the inside.
