As of 2021, the American Academy of Pediatrics has declared a national emergency on child & adolescent mental health. In schools, we often see this manifest in explosive, sometimes dangerous behaviors. School counselors have a tough task of managing the mental health of the entire student body."Due to their training and role, school counselors are uniquely qualified and well positioned to identify students’ common emotional or behavioral challenges and provide interventions, consultation to parents and teachers, and referral services to community resources"(Dekruyf, Auger, & Trice-Black, 2013). However, student mental health is a whole school issue. It cannot be properly met by one person alone. There needs to be a system for mental health present in schools. Yet school counselors are ideal to take the lead in building that system."School counselors can play critical roles in teaming and collaborating with school staff and other stakeholders to create, implement, and sustain services that attend to more far-reaching needs of students and engage families and communities in fostering success for students"(Steen, S, & Noguera, P. A, 2010). School counselors require training and coaching to build an effective school mental health system within their building. Hence my creation of Behavior to Bliss™, a group coaching program that guides K-8 school counselors in organizing and establishing effective mental health systems for students.
