Background

About Morgan Hill

For as long as anyone can remember I've been taking things apart. For the last two decades or so I've been putting them back together again (mostly in the the right order). My latest endeavour is finding and explaining the weakness then making suggestions for improvement. My computing ability started to grow at a young age when I took advance of my mother's unattended session to grant myself local admin on the family computer. From this point on I would spend much of my youth inflicting Linux on everyone around me and attempting to acquire knowledge of as many programming languages as I could. My entry intro into the working world was 2 summers spent as the pimply faced youth in the IT department at TT Games where I'd been invited to work after a 2 week work experience placement. This open my eyes to the world of system administration in cooperate IT and how a good It department could be run. After 6th form I had decided I wanted to be a programmer more than a sysadmin. I did a brief stint writing C#.net for the automotive insurance industry which with all the gusto of an 18 year old decided the job was automatable and therefore boring. I then set about trying to make it on my own as a freelance developer. A couple of months later I was took a job as a Project Planner in the rail division at Buckingham Group. It turned out that I was pretty good at calculating critical paths. This job was also boring, however I made it much more interesting by playing shadow IT often making me friends in the projects but less friends at HQ. After 3 years doing unspeakable things with Excel c# interop and AutoCAD Lua it was time to move on. I found myself a job as a Platform Engineer working on database as a service products for Anynines. I discovered I was well suited to automating things in complex cloud environments. So I spent the next 18 months writing automation in Go, Ruby and a whole lot of YAML for use well known large companies. By the end of my time at Anynines I was also mentoring working students. Almost accidental I ended up as the Devops at Holoplot where I still work but now only part-time. At Holoplot I was given a rough idea of what was needed and given the freedom to get on with it. Given that the Sphere and many other projects have opened 4 years later it seems I and the rest of the team did something right. With 4 years being a long time at one company, an on going interest in security and the advice of some friends I'm open for business for freelance work in the cyber security field. I'm particularly interest in Cloud and IoT.
