About Morganne Barrett

I currently work as a Legislative Attorney at the New York City Council, providing legal and policy counsel to Council Members on their infrastructure-related legislation. Before this, I worked for three years as an Immigration Attorney, during which I represented individuals in immigration court, defending against deportation charges and advocating for clients' ability to remain in the United States; many clients' matters also involved advocating for their release from immigration jail. I am currently licensed to practice law in the state of New York and am a licensed notary public. Previously, I engaged in several human rights projects while studying at Fordham Law, including the design and implementation of a legislative drafting course for lawyers working in Iran on behalf of marginalized groups there. I have also worked to advance gender equity at UN Women, published a report on gender-based violence against human rights lawyers, and assisted refugees in Amman, Jordan. Prior to law school, I worked with Members of the Arizona House of Representatives, joined a private law firm to aid in zoning proposals, and served with the US Fish & Wildlife Service as an AmeriCorps Volunteer to protect the endangered Oregon Spotted Frog. I am originally from Arizona, am proficient in English and Spanish, and in my free time, I enjoy biking, hiking, and exploring New York City's diverse neighborhoods.
