There is no favorable wind for the sailor who doesn’t know where to go"(Seneca) Like the ships I see daily on the Elbe I had the opportunity to come around a bit in the world. Already during studying Production Management I went abroad one year as an exchange student to Scotland. This experience to meet different people from all over Europe broadened my mind and showed me that there is so much beyond my horizon. After an internship in LA I was given the opportunity to work permanently in the US and start a career in lean manufacturing which was deployed in all company functions. Beyond the professional experience I was impressed by the positive attitude of my American co-workers: No matter how stormy the weather was, they stood on the deck and kept up there good spirit. I made the experience that if you are balanced and show a positive attitude you can take people with you. When I was offered a job for Lufthansa back in Germany I got the chance to work for a well know company to further develop my Lean Management career in an international surrounding. Besides several projects in Europe Lufthansa sent me to China where we enabled a financial turnaround by identifying significant cost savings. During this time I developed my ability to build up structures and organizations in teams so every colleague can perform to his best abilities. As the captain it was important to me to give continuous feedback, recognize good performance and create an atmosphere in which a wide spectrum of colleagues from a diverse cultural background feel comfortable. Since I am an airplane enthusiast a dream came true when I was offered a job as a Lean Manufacturing Expert at Airbus. During the 10 years at Airbus I found out that I am best for the long turns and not so much looking for new adventures. I spent several years being responsible for the Lean Implementation at different programs in Hamburg. During this time I had to lead different people in my teams and reached the biggest success: Achieving the Airbus expected Lean Maturity in several programs. That was a region no captain from Hamburg has conquered before. It was only possible by aligning the team towards one common goal. If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them the endless immensity of the sea.
