As a lecturer in the global surgery division, Moses's work centres on global surgery research, explicitly addressing the unmet need for healthcare access and the quality of surgical care. Global Surgery research interrogates two things: 1) the unmet need for access to healthcare and 2)- the quality of surgical care; these solutions, therefore, strengthen the surgical health systems. Global surgery, therefore, aims to find solutions to 1) access equitable care and 2 )access comprehensive transdisciplinary surgical care. He focuses on understanding the geospatial determinants of health (GDOH) in low-resourced settings, including factors that vary by location. His goal is to shape the public health curriculum of schools across Africa to advance geospatial analysis, statistics, and technology in the study of public health. Overall, Moses's work is dedicated to improving healthcare access and outcomes in low-resourced communities in Africa. His research, which is focused on generating, translating, and scaling up evidence to reduce environmental health and social disparities, particularly in low-resourced communities in South Africa, has had a significant impact. His work centres on factors affecting the prevention, control, and mitigation of chronic and acute non-communicable diseases in populations. He is particularly interested in understanding the relationships between the built environment and health, improving geospatial health disparities, and utilizing measures to quantify physical activity and relevant exposures using GIS, accelerometry, GPS, and other technologies. Moses is in the final stages of his PhD research, which focuses on 'Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Africa,' specifically chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in low-resourced communities in South Africa. This research is significant as it addresses the critical need to understand and address COPD management in resource-limited settings, where traditional PR services are often unavailable or underutilized. The World Health Organization predicts COPD will become the third leading cause of death by 2030, with over 90% of deaths occurring in Sub-Saharan Africa. Moses's PhD aimed to Explore COPD Risk Perception and Co-Design Prevention And Advocacy Strategies for Pulmonary Rehabilitation in South African Communities. The first of its kind in Africa, his PhD represents a novel approach to understanding COPD risk perception and PR implementation in resource-limited settings through a community-driven Citizen science methodology.
