Background
About Motoi Kimura
Through my 35+ year career at Sony, I have worked on the development of laser-based technologies such as optical discs, projectors, depth sensors, and AR glasses. As a development engineer, based on analog circuit technology as a core competency, I’ve been taking responsibility for developing new devices and integrating them into systems. In addition, I have gained experience as a technical leader/manager, liaison for external partnerships, and FAE on both set businesses and device businesses. My recent work has centered on developing LBS (laser beam scanning) technology. In the early 2010s, I worked on development and commercialization of the pico-projector module, under the collaboration with the U.S. venture company. I took a leading role in the joint development team, handling everything from drafting collaboration agreements to device development, product design, mass production ramp-up, and quality improvement over four and a half years. Following that, I took on the challenge to find breakthroughs toward higher resolution in LBS systems, exploring various MEMS mirror structures and laser light sources, while generating ideas for new architectures, signal processing, and control methods. I also worked on improving performance to laser light sources for depth sensing. The first half of my career was dedicated to optical disc technology. I worked on rewritable optical disc technologies such as magneto-optical discs and phase-change discs, contributing to the commercialization of broadcast-use optical disc recorders and the establishment of DVD standards. For Blu-ray Disc, I established high-speed, high-density recording/playback methods, leading device development for semiconductor lasers, optical ICs, and ASICs, We successfully launched the first-generation product, as the foundation for subsequent business. Later, in the semiconductor division, I focused on planning and customer development of ASICs for optical discs, supporting Blu-ray Disc speed improvements. Open to an opportunity to challenge another new technology
