About Muhammad Maqbool

I am working as a scientist at CAM Bioceramics based in Leiden The Netherlands since August 2020. I studied Materials Science and Engineering at the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany, where I received my PhD in 2019. I did my PhD research work in collaboration with industrial partner Lucideon Ltd (Stoke-on-Trent, UK) in the framework of the Horizon 2020 EU MSCA-ITN-2014-EID – Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “Drug-Free Antibacterial Hybrid Biopolymers for Medical Applications – HyMedPoly”. My project involved the synthesis, characterization, and applications of a novel group of ion substituted hydroxyapatites exhibiting antibiotic-free antibacterial properties. Specialties: • Design and development of bioceramics under ISO 13485:2016 Medical devices — Quality management systems — Requirements for regulatory purposes • Synthesis of calcium phosphate powders using various routes i.e. wet precipitation method, solid-state synthesis, sol-gel method • Substitution of metal ions in hydroxyapatites for antibacterial applications • Design, development, and testing of calcium phosphates as granules • Design, development, and testing of α-TCP cement • Manufacturing of hydroxyapatite coatings on metallic implants using the plasma spray method • Characterization of materials using the following techniques • X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement • Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) • X-ray fluorescence (XRF) • Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis • Mechanical testing of coatings • In-vitro testing of calcium phosphate-based materials
