Background
About Murray Dick
I am a research-active academic, lecturing in the theory, practice and history of journalism. I came to academia as a media practitioner; having developed and taught various skills in online journalism in industry since 2004, including- Forensic (online) search - Verifying online resources - Newsgathering (online)- Writing for the web - Search Engine Optimisation My approach to both teaching and research is informed by my experience of the organisational and professional pressures placed upon journalists. While at the BBC (2004-2008) I built a body of knowledge around the search for and retrieval of information towards solving journalistic research problems online - this knowledge formed the basis of my early research, and especially my book Search: Theory and Practice in Journalism Online (Palgrave, 2013). As a practitioner, I am interested in challenging the conventional way in which journalism is often understood within the academy; compromised between vocational and liberal arts approaches. In order to keep up-to-date in my teaching I continue to provide expertise to industry and campaigning groups in my specialisms. Some recent(ish) highlights include-'Investigative Online Search'. I ran a day-long workshop delivered to investigative journalists working on the 101 East investigative journalism strand of Al Jazeera Malaysia, in Kuala Lumpur, October 24, 2013-'Investigative online search'[Translated into Russian]. I helped to run a conference for investigative journalists from Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan organised and run by the Open Society Institute in Baku, Azerbaijan, April 14-15, 2010. Since 2007 I have undertaken sessional teaching (and training) at a number of UK universities, including: Birmingham City University; City University (London); Goldsmiths; Oxford University; St Mary's (Twickenham); University of East London and Westminster University.
