Background

About Murray Lark

I am interested in the spatial variation of the soil at multiple scales, and how statistical methods allow us to elucidate this variation and manage it in soil-crop systems. My research, at the University of Nottingham and with other colleagues in the UK and Africa, ranges from microscale (using X-ray CT to elucidate soil-root interactions) to national and regional scale (mapping evidence for nutrient deficiency risk for humans, crops and livestock). I have a general interest in the Earth Sciences, having been environmental statistician at the British Geological Survey. My primary interest is in agricultural systems and their impacts. Current research at the University of Nottingham includes projects in Africa on soil and groundwater under conservation agriculture practices and on micronutrient deficiencies and the impact of different interventions to reduce this risk. Work in the UK includes design and implementation of sensor networks to improve nutrient management in agricultural systems, hypothesis-driven analysis of big data for land management and the risk of magnesium deficiency at national scale.
