About Myah Freeman

Myah Freeman was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1998. She is a mixed media painter and sculptor creating work representing both the beauties and the struggles of the Black American experience. Freeman employs colors representing the people (black), the blood they shed (red), the Motherland (green), and wealth (yellow/gold). Coupled with this are works addressing her very own ancestry and familial experiences, rooted in the death of her father in 2012. Her work is a way of remembering the struggles, honoring the strength, and revealing the royalty of Blackness. Ultimately, it aims to increase the sense of pride within the Black community while educating those outside of it. She is currently pursuing a degree in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Program at Florida State University. Myah’s honors and awards include the FSU Student Excellence in Visual Arts Award (2019, 2020), the Ada Belle Winthrop-King Visual Arts Endowment (2019), the FSU IDEA Grant (2020), the FSU President’s Humanitarian of the Year Award (2020), and recognition by the United Nations Association-USA Youth Observer (2020). She has shown work at Phyllis Straus Gallery, FSU Honors Scholars & Fellows House and Office of National Fellowships, FSU DeGraff Tunnel, FSU Thagard Building, FSU Black Student Union, The Plant Tallahassee, Fermentation Lounge, Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Art (South Gallery), and Jacksonville Public Library Main, and a number of University Showcases.
