About Nancy Mitau

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been deeply inspired by the resilience of the human spirit. I have witnessed it firsthand—whether in the eyes of a refugee who, despite unimaginable loss, still clings to hope, or in the quiet determination of Kenyan and refugee communities rebuilding a sense of safety after experiencing trauma. As a psychologist with over a decade of experience, my passion lies in fostering spaces where healing and recovery are possible. I have led and designed trauma-informed psychosocial support programs tailored to meet the needs of both refugee populations and a small percentage of Kenyans affected by displacement, torture, and gender-based violence (GBV). My approach goes beyond traditional counselling, I integrate the latest neuroscience on trauma recovery to craft interventions that catalyze real transformation. In addition to offering direct psychosocial support, I have also trained and mentored paracounselors, and community workers, including UNHCR staff and those from partner organizations. My focus has been to equip them with the skills to deliver compassionate, effective care and also to strengthen their capacity to support others while safeguarding their own well-being. I have prioritized building resilience within these teams to prevent burnout and mitigate the impact of vicarious trauma. My work is grounded in accountability and impact. Through program monitoring and evaluation, I ensure that all interventions are evidence-based, scalable, and responsive to the needs of diverse populations. Each outcome, each improvement, represents a life better supported. Healing, however, is never a solo pursuit. I work in collaboration with government agencies, NGOs, and technical working groups to strengthen mental health referral pathways and improve service delivery frameworks. Together, we are reshaping how mental health and psychosocial support services are understood and delivered in vulnerable and displaced communities.
