About Nancy Taber

Dr. Nancy Taber is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at Brock University. Her qualitative and arts-based research explores the intersection of learning, gender, and militarism in militaries, museums, academic institutions, popular culture, and daily life. She has a particular interest in gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and sexual assault in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) as relates to organizational culture, learning, norms, policies, and practices. She was a co-director of Transforming Military Cultures, a DND-MINDS funded network, 2022-2025. Nancy also conducts fiction-based research and delivers writing workshops. Her debut novel, A Sea of Spectres, is published with Acorn Press. She is a facilitator with Writers Collective of Canada. Nancy served in the CAF from 1989-2002. She attended Royal Military College, trained as an air navigator (17 Wing Winnipeg, 406 Squadron), and deployed as a Tactical Coordinator with Sea King helicopters (HMCS Iroquois, Athabaskan, and Toronto with 423 Squadron). She worked in Wing Operations (12 Wing Shearwater), where she was also the Workplace Relations Training Coordinator. Nancy is the author/co-author of over 175 publications and presentations about learning, adult education, the military context, militarism, gender, and emergency response. For example, Nancy is the book editor of "Gendered Militarism in Canada: Learning Conformity and Resistance" and book co-editor of "Building on Critical Traditions: Adult Education and Learning in Canada" and "Feminist Critique and the Museum: Educating for a Critical Consciousness." Nancy has published in journals such as International Journal for Lifelong Education; Canadian Journal for the Study of Adult Education; Critical Military Studies; Canadian Military Journal; Journal for Military and Veteran Health Research; and, Canadian Journal of Higher Education. She is a former editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal for the Study of Adult Education. Nancy is a long-standing member and past President of the Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education. Nancy was named a Top Woman in Defence 2022 by Esprit de Corps magazine and is a member of the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame. She served as an expert witness for the Heyder-Beattie class action and as a subject matter expert for Schedule O of the Final Settlement Agreement.
