I am a licensed psychotherapist, with a supervisory designation, in Columbus, Ohio. People who see me for counseling are often noticing anxiety or depression that refuses to alleviate on its own. Practically this might mean they are experiencing a loss of focus, feeling confused or unable to make a decision, poor concentration or loss of interest in activities they previously enjoyed. Inability to sleep, angry outbursts, and “triggers” which cause distressful dreams, images or thoughts might be troublesome, as well. Sometimes people seek counseling because they are facing health, family or career challenges. These might include a medical diagnosis, conflict with others, losing one’s job, or the death/aging of a parent. At other times, past events, which were thought resolved, come to the surface and demand positive resolution. These situations might be car accidents, growing up experiences or hazing by peers. Sometimes the trauma of being in a violent situation(s) whether robbery, rape or in a war zone needs healing, so the person can return to enjoying his/her life. The process starts with the client’s goals, with discussion of history’s impact on current status and how to best achieve the individual’s goals. Tailored to individual needs, approaches can include cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy or EMDR—a powerful tool to rapidly assist individuals in healing & empowerment.
