Background

About Nancy Tumba

Dedicated to defeating HIV through innovative research and collaborative science, I am at the forefront of developing novel immunogens and vaccine strategies with the potential to end the HIV epidemic. My work is driven by a commitment to address one of the most persistent infectious diseases, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. My Background I hold a PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand but my academic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Boston University, where I graduated Cum Laude with Honours, followed by a Master’s in Molecular & Cell Biology from the University of Cape Town. My career has spanned roles in biotech, public health research, and academia, with a strong foundation in molecular biology, immunology, and HIV vaccine development. I also have the privilege to be a member of the Southern Africa Women Lift Health 2025 cohort. My Research Focus As a scientist at the University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Pathology, my research centers on HIV vaccine and immunogen development. I specialize in designing and testing novel HIV trimer-based immunogens that expose uncommon conformations and novel epitopes. My recent work explores the enhancement of these immunogens through nanoparticulate display systems—such as liposomes and protein nanocages—and evaluates their immunogenicity in pre-clinical settings. My research is instrumental to understanding antibody responses and advancing next-generation HIV vaccine candidates. I also supervise postgraduate students and teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in molecular medicine, immunology, and biomedical engineering. My Personal Mission Driven by a passion for scientific excellence and community engagement, I am committed to building sustainable research capacity in Africa. I serve on the executive board of the South African Immunology Society and am involved in multiple committees dedicated to advancing science education and research in South Africa. Through my teaching, mentorship, and volunteer work with youth development and STEM outreach programs, I strive to inspire and empower the next generation of African scientists to tackle the continent’s most pressing health challenges. My goal is to foster a new generation of researchers equipped to drive innovation in HIV vaccine development and to elevate the impact of African science on the global stage. Through my research, leadership, and collaborative efforts, I aim to contribute to the development of effective vaccines and to nurture talent that will shape the future of health sciences in Africa.
