About Nancy Wayne

There are four areas in academia that I have worked in: diversity & gender issues, research, education, and administration. DIVERSITY and GENDER ISSUES: I helped develop the UCLA Diversity Strategic Plan and was a member of the Chancellor’s Advisory Group on Diversity. I am a founding member of the UCLA School of Medicine’s Faculty Partners for Diversity. I was the founder and chair of the UCLA Women in Science Networking Group, and current founder and president of Women Advancing Together (website: https://nancylwayne.wordpress.com/), leading workshops, consulting, and coaching on issues that are of interest to women and male allies across multiple disciplines. RESEARCH: I am Professor Emerita of Physiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. I joined the UCLA faculty in 1992 and the principal investigator of research in biomedical/life sciences and social sciences. I have published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in internationally recognized journals in the fields of reproductive biology, laboratory safety, and gender issues. I continue my investigations on gender issues including gender bias, harassment, and bullying. EDUCATION: I am also a dedicated educator, and co-chaired the first year medical school curriculum for 10 years. I was Vice Chair of Instruction for the Department of Physiology in the UCLA School of Medicine for nearly 10 years. And I received the School of Medicine’s 2010 Excellence in Education Award. I continue educating students, faculty, physicians, staff, and administrators through my Women Advancing Together workshops. ADMINISTRATION: University of California-Los Angeles: As UCLA Associate Vice Chancellor for Research (2010-19), my portfolio was focused primarily on laboratory safety. I was responsible for communications with faculty with the objective of enhancing the effectiveness of laboratory safety programs and policies. I was Chair of the Advisory Board and Co-Founder of the University of California Center for Laboratory Safety. I received the 2017 Campus Leader Who Cares Award from the national Campus Safety Health & Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA). University of Redlands: As Deputy to the President for Strategic University Partnerships (2019-20), I coordinate and communicate operations pertaining to the merger & acquisition of San Francisco Theological Seminary into University of Redlands, and track progress on a public-private partnership developing a Rail Station and University Village on campus property.
