About Naomi Caselli

I have the privilege of serving as the director of the AI and Education Initiative and the Center on Sign Language and Deaf Education at Boston University, where I lead interdisciplinary teams of faculty, scientists, students, and community partners to advance the state of the art in sign language research and technology. I am the principal investigator on multiple federally-funded projects that aim to develop and apply AI and quantitative methods to analyze, understand, and enable sign language communication and learning. I choose research projects based on impact, which has led me to get creative and explore lots of different research methods and work in many different disciplines. I have published papers in leading journals and conferences across fields including cognitive science, linguistics, AI/ML, human-computer interaction, pediatrics, education, speech pathology, and deaf studies. I love making research accessible to a wide variety of audiences. I am hearing, and grew up in a house where we used both ASL and English. My early experiences of language have given me a deep appreciation for the importance of language and communication. I am passionate about collaborating with Deaf communities to co-create innovative tools and resources that promote language equity.
