About Natalie Smith

Completed my BA Honours in Geography with an emphasis in Circumpolar Studies in the Teacher Education Stream, and will be returning to Trent University in the Fall for my MA in Canadian Studies & Indigenous Studies. I am the proud recipient of the Canadian Association of Geography 2025 Undergraduate Student Award, and have received several awards and prizes from the Trent School of the Environment for my dedication to the department, the discipline of geography and my work in the Canadian and International North. My experience at Trent University thus far has included coordinating and supporting the Online Circumpolar Studies Exchange Program with Trent International and the Læra Institute for Circumpolar Education with Dr Heather Nicol, taking on a research assistant role under Dr Roger Picton to understand the urban development challenges and realties faced by craft breweries in Canada, and a thesis project examining the social and institutional barriers to offering post-secondary education in the North American and European Arctic. This summer I am working as an outreach instructor with Actua, offering local in-community STEM programming and teaching for camp workshops for youth across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
