Fairness does not mean that everyone gets the same thing, fairness means that everyone gets what they need." As the director of the Resource Specialist Program (RSP) at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco and now the Academic Dean, I strive to create a school that is fair. The RSP serves close to 200 students with mild/moderate learning differences in a college prep high school. Through a unique, flexible and individualized support system, students are given what "they need" to succeed. I created this system 7 years ago and have been fine tuning ever since. In my time at Riordan we have gone from serving 60 students with learning differences to 188. Not only have we increased the number of students that we can support, but our success rate has improved as well, with 99% of our graduates attending college. This year I have taken those idea of fairness and will be applying them on a school wide level as the Academic Dean. I believe that all students want to, and can be successful. it is our job as educators to set up systems that allow them to do this.
