About Nathan Birnbaum

Family physician committed to helping a diverse set of patients and their communities combat poor health across life's course; identifying and combatting structural barriers to health care; and politically advocating for marginalized and vulnerable populations. My main area of clinical interest is care for patients with criminal legal involvement as well as their families. This has catalyzed my research activities, my founding of a social service organization in Orange County, CA, and my development of a lecture series that has been delivered to medical students and family medicine residents at UC Irvine and UNM respectively about tailoring care to formerly incarcerated individuals. I am also an HIV specialist (AAHIVS), suboxone provider, and teach on an academic inpatient service. I have served as expert witness in the NM State Legislature, including on SB425 (2023), which mandated access to MAT in the New Mexico Corrections Department. Mentorship of students – including those providing syringe exchange services, those working with patients in the criminal legal system, or individuals applying to medical school – has also been an integral and fulfilling part of my career.
