About Nathan James

I am a molecular biologist with an interest in the molecular machines that drive fundamental biological processes. I currently hold the Mays Wild Research Fellowship at Downing College, University of Cambridge, and work with Dr. John O’Neill at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. My research is focused on the circadian clock – a biomolecular timekeeper found in every cell of the human body. This clock is critical for human health, with dysregulation strongly associated with debilitating conditions such as neurodegeneration, cancer, diabetes, and depression, but little is known about how it exerts its control on the human cell. Alongside my research, I supervise undergraduates at Cambridge and work as a private tutor teaching Biology and Chemistry for GCSE, A-Level, and university students in both face-to-face and online tutorials. I also have a passion for science outreach and public engagement, with over a hundred contact hours leading hands-on scientific activities at museums, science centres, and science festivals. My goal is to inspire young people to engage with the natural world, think like scientists, and pursue exciting careers in STEMM.
