About Nathan Matney

If I had to name a theme for my career, it would be “taking technology to the next level.”My name is Nathan Matney, and I make machines do the work for you. Whether it is having your home turn the lights on for you, enabling a car to tell the manufacturer where it is in the rework line or giving cigarette displays the power to do their own inventory, the Internet of Things (IoT)—also known as Machine to Machine (M2M) engineering—is my passion. I gravitate toward any situation where I can solve a problem through automation.It is an interesting time in the IoT world. Smart home technology, in particular, is moving toward mass adoption. Companies are in position to acquire different pieces of the puzzle to create entire ecosystems and the days of ‘niche’ players are coming to an end unless your value proposition is extremely unique and difficult to replicate. It is an exciting time for all industries to determine what can be done with the data that comes from IoT; whether that means customer insight or improved operations or service delivery.That is where I come in. In every step of my career, I have worked to elevate technology by focusing on customer needs. At TriVergent, I co-created a web development tool for small businesses. I joined Nextel (now Sprint) at a time when they were looking to monetize cellular data and took per phone revenue to a new industry record. At Lowe’s, I managed the launch of the Iris Smart Home and successfully migrated users to this new platform. I fully understand the demands placed on an organization to make something ‘cool’ while ensuring it makes good business sense. As a team leader, I believe in letting smart people do smart work with clear expectations. My experience in various fields enables me to look at a situation, find the gaps, and create a climate of change that improves productivity and outcomes.
